Have you ever wondered what makes Salma Hayek the beauty she is? Why she shows no signs of aging? Does she have a magical recipe at her disposal? Or does she know how to camouflage her wrinkles away from us? While there could be many theories, the reason for her glowing skin, as unveiled by the actress herself, lies in a Mexican Ingredient: Tepezcohuite.

What is Tepezcohuite?

Tepezcohuite is naturally sourced from the bark of Mexico’s “skin tree” AKA Mimosa Tenuiflora. It is obtained through fine grinding of this bark, which is most abundant in tropical climates like Chiapas, Mexico. Here, it towers up to 26 feet and is particular thorny with spikes reaching 1-2 inches in length. Tepezcohuite comes from the Nahuatl root word tepezcuahuitl meaning “hill of the tree that bleeds”.

Historical Use

This nontoxic, organic ingredient was historically used by the ancient Mayans in a concoction that healed skin lesions, burns and other skin diseases. More recently, on November 19, 1984, a devastating explosion in Mexico of the National Petroleum Company PEMEX gas plant, left 500 people (in Mexico) with severe burns. Tepezcohuite was the medicine of choice, being used in powder form to accelerate the healing rate of burn victims. It’s healing success was due to its natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, regenerative, and anesthetic properties. It was also used as a treatment of choice after the earthquake of 1985 (Spring) in Mexico which tragically accounted for tens of thousands of victims. Again, its amazing healing properties were put to the test, producing an analgesic effect within 3 hours of application and complete reconstitution of epidermis within 3-5 weeks of initial use. Repigmentation of skin took approximately 3 months.  The Mexican Red Cross claimed that typically 20% of badly burned victims normally do not survive with modern treatments, but when using Tepezcohuite, that statistic goes down to only 4% dying from their sustained injuries.

Regenerative Properties

Tepezcohuite has been researched by several universities worldwide and health ministries and is currently a part of several extensive studies. Findings include that Tepezcohuite bark contains a strong analgesic, tannins (130mg per 100g), lactones, flavonoids (1.0-1.2mg per ml), saponins, and numerous olingo elements. It has also been shown to inhibit the activity of Hyaluronidase which is a family of enzymes that catalyse the degradation of hyaluronic acid. Inhibiting this enzyme will help to maintain the integrity of hyaluronic acid in one’s skin. Tepezcohuite has also been found to stimulate the mitotic potential of skin cells (cell devision), clearly showing its regenerating properties.

  • Bioflavonoids: Most common flavonoids found in plant bark are: rutoside, quercetol, rhamnitol, and esculoside. They increase capillary resistance, protect skin from free radical damage, inhibit degradation of vital enzymes of connective tissue protein (maintains skin structurally sound).

Antiomicrobial Properties

Tepezcohuite has been found to strongly inhibit the growth in ALL gram positive and gram negative organisms, yeasts and dermatophytes (a pathogenic fungus that can cause infection of skin, hair and nails due to its ability to utilize keratin). The following cultures were examined: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomona aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans.
